How to Reopen a Closed Tab in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari
Closing the wrong tab is one of the most common computer mistakes, and one of the easiest to fix. The same shortcut works in almost every modern browser. Here's exactly what to press in each one, plus how to recover a whole window or a tab you closed hours ago.
Reopen closed tab shortcut by browser
| Browser | Windows / Chromebook / Linux | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Ctrl + Shift + T | Command + Shift + T |
| Microsoft Edge | Ctrl + Shift + T | Command + Shift + T |
| Mozilla Firefox | Ctrl + Shift + T | Command + Shift + T |
| Brave / Opera / Vivaldi | Ctrl + Shift + T | Command + Shift + T |
| Safari | — | Command + Shift + T or Command + Z |
In Safari, Command + Z works only right after you close the tab. Command + Shift + T works any time during the session.
How to reopen a closed window
If you closed an entire window full of tabs, you can get that back too.
| Browser | Windows / Chromebook | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge | Ctrl + Shift + T | Command + Shift + T |
| Firefox | Ctrl + Shift + N | Command + Shift + N |
| Safari | — | Command + Shift + T |
In Chrome and Edge, the same reopen shortcut restores a closed window if it was the last thing you closed. Firefox uses a separate shortcut for windows.
Find a tab you closed a long time ago
If the tab is too far back for the reopen shortcut, open your browsing history and search for it:

| Chrome / Edge | Ctrl + H | Command + Y |
| Firefox | Ctrl + H | Command + Shift + H |
| Safari | — | Command + Y |
In Chrome, the history page also has a Recently closed section. Open it from the menu under History.

Frequently asked questions
How many closed tabs can I reopen?
You can keep pressing Ctrl + Shift + T (Command + Shift + T on Mac) to reopen tabs in the reverse order you closed them. Browsers remember a limited recent list for the current session, usually at least 10 to 25 tabs. Older tabs can still be found in your history.
Does reopening a tab work in Incognito or Private mode?
Only while the private window is still open. Once you close every private window, the browser forgets those tabs and they cannot be restored.
How do I get all my tabs back after the browser crashed?
Chrome and Edge usually offer a Restore button when you reopen them. If not, press Ctrl + Shift + T right after launching. In Firefox, open the menu and choose History > Restore previous session.
Can I reopen a closed tab on my phone?
Mobile browsers don't use keyboard shortcuts, but Chrome and Safari keep a Recently Closed list. In Chrome, open the tab switcher and tap Recent tabs. In Safari, long-press the + button in the tab view.
