Trello Tips & Tricks

  • Hover + single letter = instant card actions: Most Trello shortcuts activate on whichever card your mouse is hovering over — no need to click to open it first. Hover a card and press L for labels, D for due date, or M for members. This makes bulk-editing multiple cards dramatically faster.
  • Q filters the board to your cards instantly: Press Q on any board to dim all cards that aren't assigned to you, leaving only your work visible. Press Q again to clear the filter. It's the fastest way to see just your tasks without opening the filter panel.
  • Shift+, and Shift+. move cards between lists: Instead of dragging, hover a card and use Shift+, to send it to the list on the left, or Shift+. to move it right. Combine with Shift+↑/↓ to place it exactly at the top or bottom of the destination list.

Frequently Asked Questions — Trello

How do I quickly add a card in Trello?
Press N to open the compose box at the bottom of the focused list and add a new card. Type the card name and press Enter to save it. Press Shift+Enter after typing the card name to add it and immediately open the full card editing view to add details.
How do I archive a card in Trello?
Hover over the card and press C to archive it directly without opening it. Archived cards disappear from the board view but are not deleted. You can restore them from the board's archived items via Board Menu → More → Archived Items.
How do I assign a label to a Trello card?
Hover over a card and press L to open the label picker. Click any color to apply or remove that label from the card. Labels are color-coded by default, but you can give them custom names in the board's label settings (accessible from the Board Menu).
How do I subscribe to a Trello card?
Hover over or open a card and press S to toggle your subscription. When subscribed, you receive notifications for all activity on that card — comments, attachments, checklists, and due date changes. Unsubscribe using the same shortcut to stop receiving notifications.

How to Learn Trello Keyboard Shortcuts

Trello is a visual project management tool based on the Kanban methodology, where work is represented as cards on boards with lists representing workflow stages (typically To Do, In Progress, Done). Its keyboard shortcuts are designed around card management — the most common actions in any Trello session. Pressing N creates a new card in the focused list, Enter opens the selected card, and the arrow keys navigate between cards. For label management, the number keys 1–6 toggle the corresponding label colors on and off for the selected card — a shortcut that makes color-coding a rapid operation rather than a menu-navigating one. The Q key filters the board to show only cards assigned to you, which is useful in shared boards with many participants.

Trello's shortcut system is particularly valuable for sprint planning and standup sessions where you're rapidly moving and updating many cards. The semicolon key (;) moves the selected card to the next list — mimicking the Kanban motion of advancing a task through stages. Comma moves a card to the previous list. D opens the due date picker for the selected card, and L opens the label picker. For teams that use Trello for sprint management, knowing these card manipulation shortcuts means that a sprint review session — where the team moves completed cards and adds new ones — can be done entirely from the keyboard, keeping the visual board update in step with the actual conversation rather than lagging behind mouse-clicking.
