Free Keyboard Shortcut API and MCP
Use the free public JSON API and stateless MCP server to find keyboard shortcuts with honest, record-level provenance. The API returns the existing composite IDs, application names, categories, raw key variants, platform scope, review status, source links and canonical page links. Product availability is deliberately separate from evidence that a binding works on a platform.
JSON API
- /api/apps
- /api/apps/chrome-shortcuts
- /api/search?q=reopen%20closed%20tab
- /api/actions/reopen-closed-tab
- /api/keys/Ctrl%2BShift%2BT
- /api/compare?id=chrome%3A%3Atabs%3A%3AReopen%20Closed%20Tab
- /api/sources/chrome-keyboard
Use q, app, platform, mode, verified, limit and offset on search. The maximum page size is 200; basic requests share a limit of 60 per minute per IP. Read Retry-After on a 429 and back off. Successful read responses are publicly cacheable for sixty seconds and include a dataset fingerprint. No key or paid plan is needed for basic lookup.
Model Context Protocol
The endpoint is https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp. It accepts JSON-RPC POSTs using Streamable HTTP with JSON responses, without an SSE session. Initialize, then call tools/list or tools/call. The eight tools search meanings, list apps, fetch app shortcuts, reverse-look-up keys, compare reviewed contexts, translate reviewed bindings, read sources and generate an ephemeral shortcut set.
Trust and reuse
Unknown mappings stay unknown. A source registry entry is not blanket verification of all shortcuts in an app. Retain attribution and individual official source links; third-party names and source materials retain their respective owners' rights. Contact the owner for bespoke bulk enrichment or commercial integration terms rather than assuming ownership of common key combinations.
